The Book Club

Welcome to the Daily Ceilidh Book Club.  The idea behind this group is to help connect people who enjoy reading, as well as providing a friendly group, open to everyone within Bernera and Uig, to discuss books.

Please enter your password.

In order to make sure that we are able to keep our chat rooms as safe as possible we’re asking users to contact us for a simple passcode.

Once entered it will reveal a "Join Chat" button below to enable you to enter the video chat room. If you would like to join a chat and do not have a passcode yet, please use the contact form below to get in touch and we will send you one.

NB: The passcode for all of the adult chat spaces are the same, only the Kid's chat is different, so if you have already received a passcode for a chat page then it will work for all chats.

Book Chat

Our first book club chat was held on Saturday 2nd May.  We spoke about a wide range of books that we’d read, or meant to read, especially those that felt relevant to the current situation.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 19th May at 7.30pm, when again it will be a general discussion about what we’ve read of late.  We’d also like to invite people to read short excerpts from books that they’ve enjoyed, or perhaps a poem, as well as discussing why they have chosen that particular piece.  However, there is no obligation or expectation to do this.  You are very welcome to come along just as an observer.  We hope you’ll join us.  Just don’t forget to request your passcode first.

We shall then meet again on Tuesday 2nd June for our first book group meeting, see below for details.

Out of our regular online meeting times anyone is welcome to use the chat room to talk about all things book.

The chat can be led by anyone within the chat room, and everyone can contribute.  However, our general rules apply so please refrain from using bad language, and remember that anyone joining must be made welcome and included.

The Forum

You might also like to take a look at our forum pages.  There’s a Book Chat topic, so feel free to ask questions and respond to others about all things book. Click here to visit the Forum.

The Book Group

For those of you interested in talking about books we hope you will consider joining our new book group.

The idea is that we each will read the same book, and then get together on-line to talk about it.  Over time, if demand is there, we can set up multiple groups within the club, each reading different books, perhaps even different genres.  Discussions can also be tailored to suit each group. Some people may like to hold an in-depth appraisal, perhaps discussing the morals raised within the book; others may prefer a more general chat.  Be sure to let us know and we will work hard to provide you with a suitable group. We will also welcome suggestions of books that we all might like to read, simply get in touch and tell us.

If you’re interested in joining us, please get in touch.

For our first book group get together we’ve decided to read a book by a local author.  Finlay J MacDonald was born and raised in Harris.  He went on to be a television and radio producer, before writing three books that recall his childhood in Harris.  We shall start with the first of the series – Crowdie and Cream, and other stories.

Join us here on Tuesday 2nd June at 7.30pm to discuss this book.

The book is currently available on kindle for £1.99

If you would like to read this but don’t have a kindle, or an account to enable downloading the book, or circumstances that would mean it difficult to access this version, please get in touch.  We have access to a couple of devices that we would be willing to lend if required.  Alternatively we can offer any tech support needed.

Suggestions

If you’d like extra sessions, or have ideas of how this group can be expanded, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. This is a book club for the whole community so we’re more than happy to work with you to ensure it’s open to all.
